Enjoy a short walk through the quaint village of Broughshane along the Brad River. The village has won many national and international awards for its floral displays, planting more than 75,000 flowers annually. Broughshane is located on the main A42 road from Ballymena to Carnlough. This walk starts from Houston's Mill Car Park in Broughshane Village. Houston Mill an old flax/corn mill dating from the early days of the Irish linen industry is located in peaceful rural surroundings. In 2000 the mill was restored to its original state to provide a facility for the community.
It incorporates a small bird sanctuary - be sure to look out for dipper, heron, kingfisher, mallard, yellow wagtail as well as a collection of exotic ducks in the pond as you pass.
This walk begins following the path that leads from the mill to Broughshane Main Street before crossing the road under the entrance archway of the Buttermilk Bridge Walk. Follow the path in an anti-clockwise direction, staying close to the river until you reach the play park and car park. As you walk alongside the riverside path you will soon pass through part of the 16 acre 'Little Acorn Wood' a community woodland developed and managed by the Woodland Trust.
Turn left at the play park and continue down the Knockan Road to Main Street; turn left again and proceed back to Houston's Mill. Before returning to the mill take a moment to check out 'The Thatch Inn' in the centre of the village, a two-storey, six-bay 18th century inn with a thatched roof.
